An Interesting Anecdote
Down My Memory Lane!
My father, late Veerappa Dhummi, was a smallpox vaccinator. His duty was to vaccinate every newborn child of Santhebennur (my birth place in Davangere district, Karnataka state, India) and the surrounding villages.
When, I was a boy of 9/ 10 years old, sometimes, I used to accompany him bare-footed to the nearby villages while on his duty to vaccinate the newborn children. Tears trickling down spontaneously on the cheeks of the emotionally connected nervous mothers of those tender babies while being vaccinated was not a very uncommon sight! After the vaccination, my father used to jot down the date, names of the children, parents and villages etc., in a notebook. After returning home, sometimes, he was asking me to post those details from his notebook into a wide mandatory government’s ledger, he had to maintain. While entering details of the vaccinated children into that government's huge ledger, I didn’t have even a faintest idea, one day, I would be finding the solution to all kinds of respiratory viral pandemics/ diseases like Spanish flu, covid, common colds, flus etc., which are always on the course of constant mutation and rendering the vaccines ineffectual unlike the smallpox viruses, which do not mutate!
